Leo felt that such a group was needed to respond to the serious wrong in society’s relationship with God and its abusive treatment of the poor and defenseless. He became convinced that it was to be a community of men who were committed to cultivating a deep love for Christ, through lives of self-surrender to God and service to people, especially to the poorest of society. He became increasingly aware of God’s love flooding into his life through the person of Jesus, and he wanted to return that love in the most genuine way he could. Leo began to experience the call to live as a member of a religious community. Much of his priestly life was dedicated to bridging the gap between the church and the working poor. Leo set about to help organize support systems for the parents and youth of poor families. At these moments, we remember the death and resurrection of the Lord who brings us together, consecrates us, and sends us back onto the streets of the world in the service of the gospel. In our community houses we pray the Prayer of the Church, we celebrate the Eucharist, and honour our tradition of Eucharistic adoration. Prayer strengthens the bonds of our community life and at the same time it strengthens us for our mission. It is a sign that the brotherhood/ sisterhood for which people hunger is possible in Jesus Christ. Our commitment to live together in community is the fullest realization of our solidarity with people. At present we minister predominantly in the metropolitan areas of Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Since 1910 Canadian members of the Priests of the Sacred Heart have served in ministries throughout Canada. Today we number 2300 members serving the church in 42 countries.

CONGREGATION OF THE PRIESTS OF THE SACRED HEART CODE
Pius V has been established according to the rules laid out in the Code of Canon Law as a society of the common life without public vows. Those living a common life pray together, work together, live together, have their meals and recreation together. This manner of life is clearly expressed in Canon Law, which describes various types of common life, such as that of religious orders, religious congregations, societies of the common life without public vows.
Canon 111 of the 1918 Code states: “Every cleric must belong either to some diocese or some religious institute, and there shall be no unattached clerics.” Thus, a priest must either live under a diocesan bishop or he must live the common life in a religious institute. Pius V was established is to form and ordain holy priests who are consumed with love for God and souls, and who will offer the traditional Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and administer the traditional sacraments for the faithful.Īccording to the 1918 Code of Canon Law, there are essentially two ways in which a priest must live.
